Wander amongst Canyons, Cliffs, and Waterfalls
It’s impossible to convey all of Lake Superior’s vast geological beauty. But this tour may, perhaps, capture the heart of it.
Kayak along Lake Superior’s Canyons and Cliffs! This will be a memorable and relaxing day trip! We’ll paddle between Saxon Harbor & Little Girl’s Point. In less than a mile from the harbor, we come to the mouth of the Montreal R. & kayak a short distance through the last portion of the river canyon up to a 40-foot final cascade of the 90 foot Superior Falls. We’ll have lunch on a gravel bar just below the falls, swim, take pictures & enjoy the beauty. Depending on the interests & energy of the group, we can explore the rugged shoreline alongside the 60 foot rock cliff & paddle alongside or under numerous smaller waterfalls depending on recent rainfall. For many, the short paddle to the Falls & back to the Harbor will be just far enough. This trip, therefore, offers great flexibilty.
What to expect
We assume everyone is a beginner. We’ll teach, train and guide you throughout the trip — but also respect the experiences you come with.
Participants should be able to:
1. Understand basic instructions
2. Manage personal care and mobility
3. Enter and exit the kayak. You should be able to maintain a balanced upright position while seated.
4. Be comfortable in water and able to float in an upright position with a life jacket.
Where we usually meet
We will usually meet you at one of three places for this trip, depending on your chosen destination:
Take Hwy 2 going west from Hurley/Ironwood for about 10 miles to Hwy 122. Turn right (north) for about 4 miles to Hwy A which will end at the Harbor. (Please note that there is usually a small fee for parking at the Harbor.)
Little Girl’s Point
This is another 5-6 miles beyond Saxon Harbor, if you continue on the road instead of turning on Hwy A.
Black River Harbor
Take Hwy 2 east through Ironwood to the second stop light, which is Lake Road. Go north for about 4-5 miles to airport road. Turn right (east) until this ends on Black River Road. Go left (north) until it ends at Lake Superior, where you’ll find the park. You can also start on Black River Road from Bessemer.
