Kayak along the diverse and winding sandstone shoreline of the Chequamegon Bay. Explore the formations and nooks that wind along the shoreline before having lunch and taking a hike to the waterfall at the Houghton Point Nature Preserve. This quiet and protected paddle is great for beginners or families. Lunch included.
Join us as we leave from the Washburn Marina to launch our kayaks on Lake Superior. After a short paddle, we’ll explore the sandstone cliffs and water-worn caves that extend for a few miles along the shoreline.
We’ll enjoy lunch along the shore, spend some time at the Houghton Point Nature Preserve and return
What to expect
We assume everyone is a beginner. We’ll teach, train and guide you throughout the trip — but also respect the experiences you come with.
Participants should be able to:
1. Understand basic instructions
2. Manage personal care and mobility
3. Enter and exit the kayak. You should be able to maintain a balanced upright position while seated.
4. Be comfortable in water and able to float in an upright position with a life jacket.
Where we usually meet
When paddling the Sea Caves, it’s usually easiest to meet at Meyer’s Beach. (Please note that there is a small fee for parking here.)
Coming from US2 near Ashland Wisconsin, take Hwy 13 (only heads north). Go to Washburn and turn left onto C going to Cornucopia. Turn right (east) on Hwy 13. Travel for about 5 miles until you reach Meyer’s Beach Road. (There’s a decent sign pointing the way.)
Alternatively, you can just keep going on Hwy 13 through Bayfield, which will bring you to the same spot from the opposite direction.
